This is probably the craziest travel decision I’ve made. By crazy I mean, probably a little bit much. In June, my boyfriend and I had spent two months apart. One day we thought we should take one weekend and meet in the middle. Great idea! Londoners go away for the weekend all the time! This was a bit different though.
I spent the summer in Vancouver, while he moved to Dublin. Solution to the distance problem? Meet in New York! So, we did. I took two red-eye Cathay Pacific flights, bookended by full days at work, and spent three days in the humid Manhattan heat. We were both a bit tired, but loved every minute of our silly decision.
This was my second time in New York, the last being only two months earlier. Similar to my last visit to San Francisco, I felt like I had some insider knowledge of the city, having already been once before.
We visited the top of the Empire State Building, wandered all around Midtown, the Financial District and the Meatpacking District, walked the High Line, spent an afternoon in Central Park, ate burgers at a speakeasy-style burger joint, and had drinks at the amazing rooftop bar, 230 Fifth. We checked off everything on his first-time list, minus a museum, and I was happy to see many things that I missed the last time.
And this time it was hot!
While we were at the top of the Empire State Building, Charlie saw a cool looking bar and said, “I want to go there.” Using the photo (below) as a guide, we made our way to the bottom of that building, only to find that it was 230 Fifth, the one bar that was on his list to visit that trip. Score! And what a great bar it was..
End result of this whirlwind trip? We both want to live there.
I also got to try out my new camera, the Fuji x20, that I bought the week before. The photos are spectacular! It even has settings that you’d normally do in an editing program, built right in to the camera! I can’t wait to take it on my next trip. Below are a few shots from the weekend.
