Have you vacationed on one of Ireland’s islands yet?
Never did I think I’d find myself cycling the Aran Islands in Ireland, especially not in the rain. But not knowing the plan is half the fun!
Off the coast of Ireland, just west of Galway in the North Atlantic, you’ll find the Aran Islands. These islands are home to just over a thousand people, and can be reached by boat or small plane.
I took the boat from Rossaveal, an hour west of Galway, to Inishmore, the largest of the three islands, for a day of touring around. The boat ride over took around 50 minutes, and was the roughest boat trip I’ve ever experienced! If you’re not big on boats in rough waters make sure you pick a good weather month to visit. It will be worth it though!
Renting a bike is the most popular way to see the island. There are three or four bike shops right near the ferry dock, all offering a similar style of bike at the same price. Despite the rainy day that it was, most of my fellow boat trippers headed straight for the bikes! Don’t worry though, there are minibus tours around the island if cycling isn’t your thing.
I remember thinking over and over, “can you imagine if this is where you lived?” Sometimes I think I wouldn’t survive very long in such a remote location, other times it’s an exciting option if you’re trying disconnect from our busy world. Nevertheless, it was an amazing place to visit.
If you’re ever near Galway city, take a day trip to these beautiful islands!
